What is a Firewall?

A firewall is a security device or program that monitors network traffic and detects potential threats. It is designed to follow a predefined set of security rules to determine what to allow on your network and what to block.

Firewall types can be divided into several categories based on their general structure, method of operation, and whether they offer basic or advanced threat protection (ATP). Examples of firewalls can be found below.

Firewall Types:

  • Packet-filtering firewalls
  • Circuit-level gateways
  • Stateful inspection firewalls
  • Application-level gateways (a.k.a. proxy firewalls)
  • Next-gen firewalls

Firewall Delivery Methods:

  • Software firewalls
  • Hardware firewalls
  • Cloud firewalls
